What is a Tummy Tuck?
Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a comprehensive body contouring procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the abdominal area while tightening the underlying muscles. This transformative surgery is ideal for individuals who have loose, sagging abdominal skin due to pregnancy, significant weight loss, aging, or genetics. Unlike liposuction which only removes fat, a tummy tuck addresses both excess skin and weakened abdominal muscles, creating a firmer, flatter, and more toned midsection. The procedure can dramatically improve your body contour and restore a more youthful abdominal profile.
The Procedure
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes 2-4 hours. An incision is made horizontally between the pubic hairline and navel, allowing the surgeon to access the abdominal muscles and tissue. Weakened or separated abdominal muscles are tightened and sutured together, creating a firmer abdominal wall. Excess skin and fat are removed, and the remaining skin is pulled taut and re-draped over the abdomen. The navel is repositioned to maintain natural appearance. Liposuction may be used to enhance contours along the flanks. The incisions are closed with sutures, and drains may be placed temporarily to prevent fluid accumulation.
Ideal Candidates
Ideal candidates have excess abdominal skin that doesn't respond to diet and exercise, weakened or separated abdominal muscles, stretch marks on the lower abdomen, maintained a stable weight for at least 6 months, completed childbearing or willing to wait, are non-smokers or willing to quit, in good general health, and have realistic expectations about results and scarring.
