What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are titanium posts surgically placed into the jawbone to serve as artificial tooth roots, providing a permanent foundation for replacement teeth. Unlike dentures or bridges, implants fuse with the jawbone through a process called osseointegration, creating a stable, long-lasting solution that looks, feels, and functions like natural teeth. Dental implants can replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, or support full-arch restorations, offering the most natural and durable tooth replacement option available.
The Procedure
Dental implant placement is typically performed in stages under local anesthesia or sedation. First, the titanium implant post is surgically placed into the jawbone where the tooth is missing. Over 3-6 months, the implant integrates with the bone (osseointegration). Once healed, an abutment (connector piece) is attached to the implant, and finally, a custom-made crown is placed on top. The entire process can take 3-9 months depending on healing and whether bone grafting is needed. Immediate load implants may be available in certain cases.
Ideal Candidates
Ideal candidates have one or more missing teeth, adequate jawbone density to support implants (or are willing to undergo bone grafting), healthy gums free from periodontal disease, good oral hygiene habits, and overall good health. Good candidates are non-smokers or willing to quit, have realistic expectations, are committed to regular dental visits, and have completed jaw growth (typically 18+ years old). Candidates should not have uncontrolled chronic conditions like diabetes or immune disorders that could affect healing.
