What is Arm Lift Surgery?
Arm lift surgery, or brachioplasty, is a body contouring procedure that removes excess sagging skin and fat from the upper arms to create a more toned, youthful appearance. This procedure is particularly beneficial for individuals who have lost significant weight or have loose, hanging skin due to aging. The surgery reshapes the under portion of the upper arm, from the underarm region to the elbow, resulting in smoother skin and more defined arm contours. While the procedure does leave a scar along the inner or back of the arm, most patients find the improved appearance well worth this trade-off.
The Procedure
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes 2-3 hours. An incision is made along the inner arm or back of the arm, extending from the underarm to just above the elbow. The length and pattern depend on the amount of excess skin. Underlying supportive tissue is tightened and reshaped with sutures. Excess skin and fat are removed, and liposuction may be used for additional contouring. The remaining skin is carefully re-draped over the newly defined contours. Incisions are closed with layered sutures to minimize scarring.
Ideal Candidates
Ideal candidates have significant upper arm skin laxity, are at a stable weight, have realistic expectations about scarring, are non-smokers, in good health, and have completed weight loss goals.
