What is an Extended Tummy Tuck?
An extended tummy tuck, also known as an extended abdominoplasty, is a more comprehensive body contouring procedure that goes beyond the traditional tummy tuck by addressing not only the abdomen but also the flanks (sides) and lower back. This procedure is particularly beneficial for patients who have lost a significant amount of weight and have excess, sagging skin that extends around the sides of their body. The extended tummy tuck removes more tissue than a standard abdominoplasty, creating a smoother, more contoured appearance around the entire midsection. The incision extends further around the hips and back to access and remove this additional excess skin.
The Procedure
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes 3-5 hours. The incision extends from hip to hip, wrapping around to the flanks and lower back area. Excess skin and fat are removed from the entire circumference of the lower torso. Abdominal muscles are tightened vertically, and lateral oblique muscles may also be addressed. The belly button is repositioned, and remaining skin is pulled taut and re-draped. Extensive liposuction may be used to enhance contours throughout the flanks and back. Multiple drains are typically placed to prevent fluid accumulation. The procedure requires meticulous attention to ensure smooth transitions and natural-looking results from all angles.
Ideal Candidates
Ideal candidates have excess skin extending beyond the front of the abdomen to the flanks and lower back, have undergone massive weight loss (bariatric surgery or natural), maintained stable weight for at least 6-12 months, finished childbearing, are non-smokers, in good health, and understand the extensive nature of recovery and scarring.
