What is Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Gastric bypass surgery, specifically Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, is considered the gold standard of weight loss surgery. This procedure creates a small stomach pouch and reroutes the small intestine to this pouch, bypassing a large portion of the stomach and upper intestine. This dual mechanism restricts food intake and reduces calorie and nutrient absorption, leading to substantial weight loss and remarkable improvement in obesity-related conditions, particularly type 2 diabetes.

The Procedure

Gastric bypass is performed laparoscopically under general anesthesia and takes 2-3 hours. The surgeon creates a small pouch from the upper stomach (about the size of an egg) and divides the small intestine. The lower portion of the intestine is connected to the new stomach pouch, while the upper portion (carrying digestive juices) is reconnected further down, creating a Y-shaped configuration. This arrangement restricts food intake and bypasses significant portions of the digestive tract, reducing calorie absorption.

Ideal Candidates

Ideal candidates have a BMI of 40 or higher, or a BMI of 35-39.9 with severe obesity-related health conditions like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, or severe sleep apnea. Particularly suitable for patients with diabetes or severe metabolic syndrome. Good candidates have attempted traditional weight loss without sustained success, are committed to lifelong dietary changes and supplementation, understand the complexity and irreversibility of the procedure, and are psychologically prepared for major lifestyle transformation.

Benefits

  • Dramatic weight loss of 60-80% of excess body weight
  • Most effective bariatric procedure for long-term weight loss
  • Rapid improvement in type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome
  • Significant reduction in obesity-related health conditions
  • Decreased hunger and increased satiety
  • Proven long-term success rates
  • Can improve quality of life dramatically
  • May reverse or improve multiple chronic conditions

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

We know planning surgery overseas comes with important questions. Our FAQ covers everything from pricing and insurance to travel, recovery, and aftercare, so you can feel informed and confident before your journey with Azurite.
When should I pay my oustanding balance?

Once you’ve paid a 30% deposit and have secured your surgery date. We recommend paying your outstanding balance as soon as possible so you can receive your surgery itinerary. But if you’re unable to pay straight away - we need it paid latest 30 days before your scheduled surgery date.

How much should I pay to secure a surgery date?

We ask that you pay 30% of your total invoice.

When will I receive a receipt for payment?

Receipts for payment do not happen automatically. A member of our team waits for the payment to hit banking and then have it feed to our accounting system. Generally this can take 2-4 days once you have sent your payment.

How should I pay for things overseas?

We always recommend having a credit card on hand or at least a debit mastercard or visa.

Also make sure you notify your bank you are going overseas. You can do this either via online banking, in branch or calling your bank directly. AMEX doesn’t require this.

Are meals included?

Only breakfast is included but you can eat like a King in Thailand with some of the best restaurants in the world.  Also feel is very affordable.

We do recommend you bring a protein powder and greens powder (any brand) with something like spirulina or wheat grass in it. This is because after surgery clients are generally not hungry and can become quite nauseous

Can I pay by credit card?

Yes, you can. We accept all major credit cards however you’ll incur a 3% transaction fee. If you wish to pay via credit card we will send you a payment link.

Can I get a refund?

Cancellation with 30 or more days’ notice: Cancellation before 30 days will incur an AUD 3000 cancellation fee.

Cancellation within 29 days or less: All surgery packages canceled less than 30 days before the scheduled surgery date will lose 30% of their total invoice price

Cancellation within 7 days: Cost of surgery is forfeited unless Azurite Package is rescheduled

Cancellation on the day of surgery: The cost of surgery is forfeited unless Azurite Package is rescheduled within the travel time window (departure flight window).

If a client decides to not proceed with a scheduled surgery during their stay in Thailand or another Azurite location, they will incur an additional hospital package fee if they choose to proceed with the surgery at a later date.

There are no refunds on surgeries that you choose not to proceed with if you are on a multi-surgery package due to the discount given.

Refunds will be given for medical reasons that are not pre existing.

Can I bring a companion?

Yes, you can bring one companion for free as your support person. However, to avoid additional charges generally the companion stays with you on the sofa bed at hospital. If your companion does not want to stay at hospital you will be invoiced additional nights to keep your hotel reservation while at hospital. Current rate is 150 AUD (but is subject to change)

Who is my surgeon?

At Azurite we use a select team of ISAPS accredited plastic and reconstructive surgeons and have made the decision to not be associated with a surgeon name, and results only. Full details of surgeon will be provided upon deposit payment made.

Is accommodation included?

Yes, all of our packages include accommodation at our partner hotel the Chatrium Residence Sathorn. As a One Bedroom Deluxe Suite. If you require an additional room or a two bedroom you’ll be invoiced an upgrade fee.
