What is Full Mouth Rehabilitation?
Full mouth rehabilitation, also called full mouth reconstruction, is an extensive, comprehensive treatment approach that rebuilds or restores all teeth in both the upper and lower jaws. This complex treatment goes beyond cosmetic concerns to address serious functional, structural, and aesthetic dental problems simultaneously. Full mouth rehabilitation combines restorative, cosmetic, and neuromuscular dentistry principles to restore optimal oral health, proper bite alignment, and beautiful smile aesthetics for patients with extensive dental damage, disease, or dysfunction.
The Procedure
Full mouth rehabilitation begins with comprehensive examination including X-rays, CT scans, bite analysis, and treatment planning. The process typically involves multiple procedures performed in phases over 6-12 months or longer. Common treatments include dental implants for missing teeth, crowns and bridges for damaged teeth, gum disease treatment, orthodontics for alignment, TMJ therapy, bone grafting, root canals, and cosmetic procedures. Each phase builds upon the previous, systematically addressing functional issues first, then structural restoration, and finally aesthetic refinement to achieve complete oral rehabilitation.
Ideal Candidates
Ideal candidates have extensive dental problems including multiple missing, broken, or severely damaged teeth, advanced gum disease, significant bite misalignment, TMJ disorders, or severe tooth wear from grinding. Good candidates are committed to the lengthy treatment process, understand the significant time and financial investment, are in adequate overall health for multiple procedures, and have realistic expectations. This treatment suits those with complex dental issues requiring comprehensive reconstruction to restore function, health, and aesthetics.
