What is a Lip Lift?
A lip lift is a surgical procedure that shortens the space between the base of the nose and the upper lip (the philtrum), resulting in a more youthful, fuller-looking upper lip with greater vermillion (pink lip) show. Unlike temporary dermal fillers, a lip lift provides permanent results by removing a small amount of skin beneath the nose, which rolls the upper lip upward, creates a more pronounced cupid's bow, and often reveals more of the teeth when smiling.
The Procedure
The lip lift is performed under local anesthesia with sedation and typically takes 1-2 hours. A precise amount of skin is removed from just below the nose along the natural crease where the nose meets the upper lip. The most common technique is the subnasal bullhorn lip lift, where the incision follows the base of the nose in a subtle curve. The lip is then elevated and secured to create the desired amount of show and shape. Sutures are placed carefully to minimize scarring along the natural nose-lip junction.
Ideal Candidates
Ideal candidates have a long distance between the nose and upper lip (typically over 15-18mm), thin or aging lips with minimal vermillion show, and desire permanent lip enhancement. Good candidates are in good health, have realistic expectations, and understand that this creates a specific aesthetic of a shorter, more upturned lip. This procedure is excellent for those seeking an alternative to repeated filler treatments and wanting to enhance their smile permanently.
Benefits
- Permanent lip enhancement without ongoing filler treatments

- Enhances the cupid's bow definition
- Shows more pink lip and teeth when smiling
- Minimal downtime compared to other facial procedures
- Can be combined with other facial procedures
- Natural-looking results when properly performed
- Scar typically well-hidden along nose-lip junction
