What is a SMAS Facelift?
The SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) facelift is a time-tested surgical technique that addresses facial aging by tightening the underlying muscular layer of the face. This procedure focuses on the face and temporal regions, lifting sagging tissues, smoothing wrinkles, and restoring youthful facial contours. By working with both the SMAS layer and the skin, this approach provides natural-looking, long-lasting results that can rejuvenate your appearance by 10-15 years.
The Procedure
Performed under general anesthesia over 3-5 hours, the SMAS facelift involves incisions along the hairline and around the ears. Your surgeon will separate the skin from underlying tissues, then lift and tighten the SMAS layer before re-draping the skin. Excess skin is removed, and incisions are carefully closed with fine sutures. The temporal region is addressed through additional incisions in the hairline, lifting the outer brow area and smoothing crow's feet for a comprehensive upper and mid-face rejuvenation.
Ideal Candidates
Ideal candidates are individuals aged 40-70 experiencing moderate facial aging, including sagging cheeks, jowls, nasolabial folds, and loss of jawline definition. Good candidates have realistic expectations, adequate skin elasticity, good overall health, and are non-smokers or willing to quit. This procedure is excellent for patients seeking significant improvement without the extended recovery of more advanced techniques.
