What is Gynecomastia Surgery?
Gynecomastia surgery, or male breast reduction, is a procedure designed to treat enlarged male breasts by removing excess glandular tissue, fat, and sometimes skin. Gynecomastia affects up to 50% of men at some point in their lives, causing physical discomfort and significant emotional distress. This condition can result from hormonal changes, medications, genetics, or weight fluctuations. Surgery creates a flatter, firmer, more masculine chest contour, dramatically improving confidence and quality of life.
The Procedure
Gynecomastia surgery is performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation and takes 1-3 hours depending on severity. For fatty tissue, liposuction alone may be sufficient through small incisions. For glandular tissue, surgical excision is performed through incisions around the areola. Severe cases may require skin removal and nipple repositioning. The surgeon removes excess tissue, sculpts the chest for masculine contours, and closes incisions carefully to minimize scarring. Drains may be placed temporarily, and a compression garment is worn during healing.
Ideal Candidates
Ideal candidates are physically healthy men bothered by enlarged breasts that don't respond to diet or exercise, have good skin elasticity, maintain stable weight, are non-smokers or willing to quit, and have realistic expectations. Good candidates have gynecomastia for at least 18 months (ruling out temporary hormonal fluctuations), are not overweight or willing to reach healthy weight first, and have no underlying medical conditions causing the enlargement. This surgery suits men experiencing physical or psychological distress from their chest appearance.
