What is a Mini Tummy Tuck?
A mini abdominoplasty, or mini tummy tuck, is a less extensive version of the traditional tummy tuck that focuses specifically on the lower abdomen below the navel. This procedure is ideal for patients with a small amount of excess skin and fat in the lower abdominal area but do not require extensive muscle repair or upper abdominal contouring. The mini tummy tuck involves a shorter incision, no repositioning of the belly button, and a quicker recovery period compared to a full abdominoplasty. It's perfect for individuals who are close to their ideal weight but have stubborn lower belly pooch that won't respond to diet and exercise.
The Procedure
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia or twilight sedation and takes approximately 1-2 hours. A horizontal incision is made just above the pubic area, similar to a C-section scar but typically shorter than a full tummy tuck incision. The skin is lifted only to the level of the navel, and excess skin and fat are removed from the lower abdomen. Lower abdominal muscles below the belly button may be tightened if needed. The skin is pulled down and the excess is trimmed away. Unlike a full tummy tuck, the navel is not repositioned. Liposuction may be added to enhance contours. The incision is closed with sutures designed to be hidden beneath underwear or bikini bottoms.
Ideal Candidates
Ideal candidates have good skin elasticity, excess skin limited to the area below the navel, minimal to moderate fat deposits in lower abdomen, weakened muscles only in the lower abdominal region, are at or near their goal weight, have realistic expectations, completed childbearing, are non-smokers, and are in good overall health.

Risks and Complications
Risks
- Limited Correction: Only addresses lower abdomen, not suitable for extensive concerns
- Scarring: Permanent scar along bikini line (shorter than full tummy tuck)
- Seroma: Fluid accumulation requiring drainage
- Asymmetry: Uneven contours or scar placement
- Skin Irregularities: Rippling or unevenness in treated area
- Numbness: Altered sensation in lower abdomen
- Infection: Risk of surgical site infection
- Need for Revision: May require full tummy tuck later if concerns develop
Important Considerations
- Limited Scope: Not suitable if you have loose skin above the navel
- Belly Button: Cannot address belly button appearance or position
- Upper Abdomen: Does not tighten upper abdominal muscles
- Future Pregnancies: Best to wait until finished having children
- Weight Maintenance: Results depend on maintaining stable weight
- Realistic Expectations: Understand limitations compared to full tummy tuck
- Scar Care: Proper care needed for optimal scar healing
- May Need Upgrade: Some patients later opt for full tummy tuck
