What is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as sleeve gastrectomy or vertical sleeve gastrectomy, is a weight loss procedure that reduces the stomach size by approximately 75-80%. During this surgery, a large portion of the stomach is permanently removed, leaving a narrow, tube-shaped stomach about the size of a banana. This dramatically restricts food intake and reduces the production of hunger hormones, resulting in significant, sustained weight loss and improvement in obesity-related health conditions.
The Procedure
Gastric sleeve surgery is performed laparoscopically under general anesthesia and takes 1-2 hours. The surgeon makes several small incisions in the abdomen and inserts a laparoscope and surgical instruments. Using a stapling device, approximately 75-80% of the stomach is removed along the greater curvature, leaving a narrow vertical sleeve. The removed portion is permanently extracted from the body. The remaining stomach is closed with surgical staples, and the incisions are sutured. This procedure is irreversible but highly effective.
Ideal Candidates
Ideal candidates have a BMI of 40 or higher, or a BMI of 35-39.9 with serious obesity-related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea. Good candidates have tried conventional weight loss methods without long-term success, are committed to permanent lifestyle changes, understand the risks and benefits, and are in adequate health for surgery. Candidates should be free from substance abuse and have realistic expectations about outcomes.
