What is Otoplasty?
Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is a procedure designed to correct prominent, protruding, or misshapen ears. Commonly performed to address ears that stick out too far from the head, this surgery can also correct ear size, shape asymmetries, and various congenital deformities. By reshaping the ear cartilage and repositioning the ears closer to the head, otoplasty creates a more balanced, natural appearance that significantly improves self-confidence, especially in children and adolescents who may face teasing.
The Procedure
Otoplasty is performed under general anesthesia for children or local anesthesia with sedation for adults, taking 1-2 hours. An incision is made in the natural crease behind the ear, providing access to the ear cartilage. The surgeon then reshapes, sculpts, or removes cartilage as needed, and repositions the ear closer to the head using permanent internal sutures. The incisions are carefully closed, and a protective headband is applied. Both ears are typically treated during the same surgery to ensure symmetry.
Ideal Candidates
Ideal candidates include children aged 5-6 years and older (when ear development is nearly complete) or adults bothered by prominent or protruding ears. Good candidates are in good health, have realistic expectations, and for children, are cooperative and can follow post-operative instructions. This procedure is excellent for those experiencing self-consciousness, teasing, or distress about ear appearance. Adults of any age can benefit, though the psychological benefits are often greatest when performed in childhood.
