What is Breast Revision Surgery?
Breast revision surgery, also known as secondary breast surgery, is a corrective procedure performed to address complications, unsatisfactory results, or changes that have occurred following a previous breast augmentation, lift, or reduction. This specialized surgery may involve implant removal, replacement, repositioning, or complete revision of previous work. Whether you're experiencing complications like capsular contracture, implant rupture, or simply desire a different size or look, breast revision surgery can help you achieve your aesthetic goals and resolve any issues.
Common Reasons for Revision
Patients seek breast revision for various reasons including capsular contracture (hardening around implants), implant rupture or deflation, implant malposition or displacement, asymmetry between breasts, desire for different implant size, rippling or visible implant edges, bottoming out (implants sitting too low), double bubble deformity, changes due to aging or weight fluctuation, dissatisfaction with original results, or removal of old implants.
The Procedure
The specific techniques used depend on your individual concerns and goals. The surgery may involve removing and replacing implants with different sizes, changing implant placement (over or under muscle), removing scar tissue capsules, repositioning implants or breast tissue, performing a breast lift, using dermal matrices or fat grafting for coverage, or complete implant removal with or without replacement. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes 2-4 hours depending on complexity.
Ideal Candidates
Ideal candidates have experienced complications from previous breast surgery, are dissatisfied with their current breast appearance or size, have implant-related issues requiring correction, maintain realistic expectations, are in good general health, and allow adequate healing time from previous surgery (typically 6-12 months).
