What is Breast Reduction Surgery?
Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a procedure that removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin to achieve a breast size more proportionate to your body and to alleviate discomfort associated with overly large breasts. This transformative surgery not only improves physical comfort but also enhances body contour and self-image. Many women seek breast reduction to relieve chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain, as well as skin irritation beneath the breasts.
The Procedure
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes 2-4 hours. Your surgeon will make incisions, usually in an anchor pattern (around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and along the crease), though the exact pattern depends on breast size, shape, and amount of reduction needed. Excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed, and the nipple-areola complex is repositioned to a higher, more youthful position. The remaining tissue is reshaped to create smaller, lighter, and firmer breasts. Liposuction may be used to remove excess fat from the sides of the breasts.
Ideal Candidates
Ideal candidates are women who experience physical discomfort from large breasts, including back, neck, or shoulder pain, skin irritation, bra strap grooving, difficulty exercising, or posture problems. You may be a good candidate if your breasts are disproportionately large for your frame, you have realistic expectations, you're in good general health, you're a non-smoker, and your breast development is complete. It's best to wait until after childbearing is complete, as pregnancy and breastfeeding can affect results.
